The Challenge
Compstat, a public crime statistics portal for the largest police force in the United States, needed a complete redesign to enhance its usability and accessibility. The existing platform struggled to effectively present vast amounts of critical crime data in a way that was both engaging and easy to navigate for the public. The challenge was to create a user-friendly interface that simplified complex data while maintaining accuracy and transparency, ensuring the portal served as a reliable resource for public awareness.
The project required a balance of functionality and design, transforming dense data into visually appealing and digestible formats that empowered users to explore and understand the information with ease.
The Strategy
As Creative Director at DVG, I led the design of a new and improved Compstat website, focusing on both UX and visual design. My approach involved crafting an intuitive interface with dynamic charts, graphic elements, and engaging micro-interactions that effectively conveyed crime data while adding visual appeal. By simplifying navigation and enhancing the overall user experience, the redesign made it easier for the public to access and understand critical information.
To ensure accuracy and usability, I collaborated closely with stakeholders, incorporating feedback into iterative prototypes and designs. The final product not only streamlined data presentation but also adhered to the department’s standards for transparency and reliability.
The Results
The redesigned Compstat portal successfully transformed the way crime data was presented to the public. Visually captivating charts and user-friendly interactions made exploring crime statistics intuitive and engaging, increasing the accessibility of critical information. The portal’s modern design and enhanced functionality strengthened public trust and positioned the platform as a reliable resource for community safety awareness.
