Challenge
CompStat, the public crime statistics portal for the nation’s largest police department, required a full redesign. Built on large-scale crime data and Esri-based geospatial systems, the existing platform made complex information difficult for residents to navigate and interpret. The experience lacked clarity, limiting both usability and public transparency.
Strategy
As Creative Director at DVG, I led the redesign of the platform’s UX, information architecture, and visualization system. Working closely with crime analysts and GIS data sources, I developed interactive charts, comparative views, and map-based filtering tools that simplified dense datasets into structured, readable insights. The interface prioritized hierarchy, responsiveness, and intuitive exploration across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
Results
The redesigned portal made complex, location-based crime data significantly more accessible and understandable to the public. By transforming raw statistics into clear visual narratives, the platform strengthened transparency and improved how residents engaged with public safety information.
